Biological X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Applying for Beamtime

One of the major advantages of the BioXAS sector is the integration of imaging and spectroscopy techniques. Researchers can first use XRF imaging to locate areas with interesting elemental concentrations and then use XANES or EXAFS spectroscopy to determine the chemical form and oxidation state of those elements.

This combined approach is particularly valuable in environmental and biological studies. For example, scientists studying contaminated soils can determine not only where metals are located but also whether the metals exist in toxic or stable chemical forms. Similarly, researchers studying plants can analyze how nutrients or metals are transported and stored within tissues.

All proposals for access to the CLS are reviewed for safety, technical feasibility, and, if applicable, ethics. The review process, the method by which user beamtime is awarded and scheduled, and the times that proposals are considered vary depending on the access mechanism chosen by the user.
